Ziraat Katılım and Green Crescent Launch a Card That Blocks Betting and Gambling Payments

Turkey has taken another notable step in the fight against gambling addiction, online betting and harmful spending habits. Ziraat Katılım, in partnership with the Turkish Green Crescent, has introduced Bağımsız Kart, a special card designed not only for daily payments but also for financial self-control.

The card, built on Turkey’s domestic TROY payment infrastructure, stands out because of its restricted spending categories. It cannot be used at gambling and betting websites, or at merchants selling alcohol and tobacco products. In other words, Bağımsız Kart works like a regular payment card for everyday needs, while automatically blocking transactions in areas linked to addiction risk.

More Than A Card, A Built-In Financial Brake

Bağımsız Kart is especially relevant at a time when depositing money into online betting platforms can take only a few seconds. For many users, that speed can turn an impulsive decision into an instant financial loss. The new card tries to slow down that process by placing a practical barrier between the user and high-risk spending.

This makes the card more than a simple banking product. It is also a form of preventive design: a tool that helps users manage their money before a risky transaction takes place. For people trying to stay away from gambling, betting or similar habits, that extra layer of friction can be meaningful.

A Green Crescent Partnership With Social Purpose

The Turkish Green Crescent has long worked on addiction prevention and public awareness. With Bağımsız Kart, that mission is now being reflected inside the banking system. The message is clear: financial products can support not only consumption, but also healthier life choices.

The card may also appeal to families who want a safer payment option for young people, students or anyone who needs support in avoiding harmful spending channels. Users can still shop, pay bills and manage ordinary expenses, but the card is closed to betting, gambling, alcohol and tobacco-related purchases.

Financial Tools Are Becoming Part Of Addiction Prevention

Turkey’s latest move also reflects a wider shift in how gambling addiction is being addressed. Until recently, the discussion often focused on legal restrictions, public campaigns and enforcement. Now, banks and payment systems are becoming part of the prevention model.

This approach is important because online betting and digital gambling are closely connected to payment convenience. When money can move instantly, control becomes harder. By limiting certain payment routes, banks can reduce the ease of access and help create a more controlled financial environment.

Similar Gambling Blocks Already Exist In Other Countries

Turkey is not alone in exploring this type of solution. In the United Kingdom, digital banks such as Monzo and Starling have already introduced gambling-block features. Monzo allows customers to turn on a gambling block in the app, which declines regulated gambling transactions before they go through, while also using a cooldown period before the block can be removed.

Starling Bank offers a similar feature, allowing users to block card payments to most gambling merchants online or in person. If a customer wants to reactivate gambling payments, Starling applies a 48-hour delay, making impulse betting harder.

These examples show that banking-based gambling controls are becoming more common globally. What makes Bağımsız Kart different is that it combines this idea with a broader social responsibility model and the Green Crescent’s addiction-prevention mission.

A New Approach To Betting Payments In Turkey

Bağımsız Kart’s strongest feature is its direct impact on spending behavior. Instead of only warning users about the risks of betting or gambling, the card changes what can actually be paid for. That gives the product a more active role in gambling addiction prevention.

This matters especially in the age of mobile betting and online gambling, where access is fast, private and constant. A person no longer needs to visit a physical venue to gamble. A phone, an account and a payment method can be enough. Bağımsız Kart responds to that reality by turning the payment method itself into a protective filter.

Public Banks Had Already Removed The “Games Of Chance” Tab

Bağımsız Kart follows another important development in Turkey’s banking sector. Earlier, Ziraat Bankası, VakıfBank and Halkbank removed the Games of Chance section from their mobile banking applications. That section had made it easier for users to transfer money directly to certain betting and lottery platforms.

With that change, public banks reduced one of the most convenient digital routes for funding gambling-related accounts. Now, Ziraat Katılım and the Green Crescent are taking the idea further with a dedicated card model that blocks risky spending categories at the transaction level.

Together, these steps suggest that Turkey is entering a new phase in the fight against online betting, gambling addiction and harmful digital spending. Bağımsız Kart is not just another card in the wallet; it is a preventive financial tool designed for a period in which addiction risks increasingly move through screens, apps and payment systems.
