Release Orders Issued in the Cases of Metehan Baltacı and Mert Hakan Yandaş

In Turkey’s wide ranging investigation into allegations of illegal betting and match fixing in football, release orders for two high profile players have drawn fresh attention. Metehan Baltacı of Galatasaray and Mert Hakan Yandaş of Fenerbahçe were both released in separate cases after appearing in court, but the rulings do not mean the proceedings are over. In both cases, the trials will continue without the players remaining in custody.

Metehan Baltacı Released as Trial Continues

Metehan Baltacı, who had been detained in December 2025 as part of the investigation, appeared before a judge on March 25, 2026. The court decided to release him after reviewing the time he had already spent in custody and the current stage of the case.

According to the indictment, Baltacı is accused of placing bets related to certain matches. Prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence, while the court has chosen to continue examining the file before reaching a final judgment.

The latest ruling means Baltacı will now continue the legal process outside prison, but the charges against him remain in place and the case is still ongoing.

Mert Hakan Yandaş Also Released After Court Hearing

Another major figure in the investigation, Mert Hakan Yandaş, appeared in court on April 3, 2026. At the end of the hearing, the court ordered the release of Yandaş as well as Ersen Dikmen, who is named in the same file.

The allegations in this case focus on financial transfers between the two men and claims that the money flow was linked to betting activity. In his defense, Yandaş denied the accusations against him.

With the court’s decision, Yandaş will also remain free while judicial proceedings continue.

The Investigation Extends Beyond Two Players

The football betting and match fixing probe is not limited to Baltacı and Yandaş. During the operation carried out on December 9, 2025, action was taken against a large number of people. The file includes not only footballers, but also club linked figures and other individuals believed to be connected to the case.

The broad scope of the investigation has fueled debate in Turkish football, as authorities appear to be examining whether the allegations go beyond isolated incidents and point to a wider network.

Ndao Was Released While Sancak Was Placed Under Judicial Control

Among the other names linked to the investigation, Alassane Ndao was also released following a court hearing in late March.

Murat Sancak, a businessman and football executive, was not handled in exactly the same way. In his case, the court ordered release under house arrest and judicial control measures in January. As a result, several of the most widely discussed names in the investigation have now left prison or detention under different legal conditions.

These developments show that the authorities are treating each suspect through separate legal assessments, even though the names emerged under the same broader investigation.

Criminal Proceedings and Football Discipline Are Separate Matters

One of the most important points in the case is that the criminal investigation and the football disciplinary process are moving on separate tracks. While the courts are examining criminal liability, the Turkish Football Federation has already continued its own disciplinary action in relation to betting allegations involving players.

For that reason, release decisions issued by criminal courts do not automatically remove sporting sanctions. A player may be released from custody while still facing disciplinary penalties within football.

Attention Now Turns to the Next Stage of the Cases

With these latest release orders, the investigation has entered a new phase. However, the courts have not yet issued final rulings on the substance of the allegations.

For Metehan Baltacı, Mert Hakan Yandaş, and others whose names have appeared in the files, the decisive stage will be the upcoming hearings and the courts’ final evaluation of the evidence.

For the wider football public in Turkey, the case is no longer only about individual players. It has also become a test of how the sport will respond to questions of credibility, oversight, and accountability in the face of serious betting and match fixing allegations.
